I watched the movie The Quiet American today. One of the plot elements concerned a CIA instigation of a Vietnamese civilian bombing that was staged so that they could blame the Communists for the atrocities. It would not seem so real if I had not recently heard an NPR interview with a man who claimed the CIA had done exactly the same thing in Iran in order to put the shah back in power.

Has there been a time during any recent administration when a president didn't look us straight in the eye and lie ?

I really liked that film, and it was all the more poignant considering current events. Even good intentions are not enough, and I very much doubt the administration even has that at the moment.

I doubt that. Politics can be so discouraging.

Yes, it is ironic that this movie had to be delayed because of 9/11. Although I would never believe that our government would be capable of killing American citizens, I can now understand why some people in other countries thought the CIA could have planned 9/11.

I would. Call me a cynic, but I really believe they are capable of just about anything.
