Long Live the Queen

Five years ago, a wonderful lady came into our lives. She was (and is) a teacher of gifted students at a middle school. I think teachers of middle school students should be appreciated every day. Good teachers of middle school students should be given the Congressional Medal of honor.

This teacher calls herself the Queen in jest, but she is often a surrogate mother to these kids who know they are different at a time when being different is terrifying. Her class is a haven where they can be themselves and still feel part of the group.

Both of my sons have had her as a teacher. W would not have survived middle school nearly as well without her. At the beginning of school, I thanked her for coming to his funeral. She hugged me and said," He will be missed." The perfect words.

Friday, she is going in for surgery for cancer of the breast that has spread to her lymph nodes. Shortly after, she will have to begin the hard road of chemotherapy. We decided to do something special for her. As A said, "It's the least we can do."

We bought her a lovely Queen's hat with (fake) ermine, velvet and jewels. She has threatened to wear a purple wig after her hair falls out, and we wanted to give her a fun alternative. We put it in a hat box and decorated it with her coat of arms and the words "Royal Haberdashery--By Appointment to Her Majesty" I hope she likes it. It was the least we could do.

  • Score!

For some reason, all the kids are getting out early, even though there is no ice on the ground yet. All of my clients except one canceled (all are…

  • I always knew it
